Support Your Mental Health
Updated: May 14
May is Mental Health Awareness Month. BROWN GIRL jane is proud to support this national campaign as our company was founded with the explicit purpose of supporting the wellness of women of color. We believe mental health is the foundation of wholeness, and we recognize the stress and anxiety that often results from being everything to everyone.
We believe that this is important now more than ever.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness,1 in 5 adults in the US experience a mental illness. Among Black adults,16 percent are estimated to suffer and are the second least likely group to receive treatment or counseling.
Black women especially wrestle their mental health. We consistently report higher feelings of sadness and helplessness compared to white women. Add in the multilayered socioeconomic barriers, lack of access to healthcare and the ugly stigma that is often attached to seeking help and treatment, black women far too often end up suffering in silence. This has got to change.
At BROWN GIRL jane we continuously research and share educational information about mental health and wellness practices, and financially support and partner with dynamic organizations that are doing direct work in this space.
This month, we will be donating a portion of our sales to the Black Women’s Health Imperative, an organization that for over 35 years has the been at the forefront of black women’s health issues. Through health and educational programming, BWHI works to help protect and advance the health and wellness of Black women and girls. Their work is even more relevant today as we navigate the stresses of COVID-19 because data shows that this pandemic has been particularly hard on black women and families.
As a black woman founded and led company, we recognize that we must continue the conversations about mental health beyond just this month. Our goal is to normalize the conversation about mental health and let our sisters know that it is okay to seek help and additional resources if they are ever feeling overwhelmed because self-care is not selfish…it’s essential.
Take control of your mental health - make it your priority. And, know that BROWN Girl jane is here to help you on your journey.
